So... plastics = bad. Gotcha. Now what?
I've been researching, as I love to do, and have found that the best alternatives to plastic are stainless & glass. I'm leaning towards stainless as it's less heavy and there are more items available in it.
Being the thrifty sort, I'm currently saving some Swagbucks {not using Swagbucks? Click here to find out more and start earning $ for something you may be currently doing for nada - you can read my post about it HERE} for something like this -
DH will be returning to work full-time again soon and I'll be making his lunches, so first on the agenda will be to score him a decent Tiffin. Like this {click on all images for more info*}:

or I could do several of these together in a

And if I need something leak-proof these two items fill that need {one has plastic lids but they are BPA/P-free}:

or these from Living Without Plastic with Silicone seals:

I'll be packing things that don't really need to be reheated as, obviously, these can't be put in a microwave {altho' if time permits they can be reheated in a toaster oven} - but I don't like microwaves anyway. And that's a post for another day. :)
These would easily work for at-home storage/leftover storage as well.
Even tho' I'm here dissing plastic, I would be remiss if I didn't mention Laptop Lunches in this post. They have worked hard to revamp sack lunches as we knew them and teach the reduction of waste and packaging. While their items are plastic, they make a lot of sense for kids AND are BPA & Phthalate free, which is very important. I have never tried their products but know several people who have, and they say it's made lunch so much easier and their children love them, and eat better because of them. They were only mostly excluded from the above post because I'm gathering lunch packing items for an adult for whom stainless suits his personal taste better.
As you replace your plastic tubs with beautiful stainless please feel free to reuse said tubs to hold other things in your kitchen, craft room, office, or garage - just not food - or to recycle them. Please please do not add them to the pile in the ocean! Thanks! :)
